The report give an overview of the current state of research undertaken in the area of the information society . Five essential subjects were selected for more detailed exploration: gender equality, cultural and linguistic diversity, freedom of expression, people with disabilities, and universal access and infoethics . The study was prepared by UNESCO in preparation for the World Summit on Information Society, in 2003.
The report focuses among others on research that has been conducted internationally on the topic of gender and the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The report presents a brief analysis of various research studies and scholarly publications examined, focusing on the main trends identified and some gaps in the body of literature consulted. The report also includes some recommendations for future investigations.
